The Medical School of the University of Crete trains students at undergraduate, graduate and doctoral level with modern standards. It prepares doctors who will practice the science of Medicine with high quality specifications. He points out and tries to answer fundamental questions about the mechanisms, prevention and treatment of diseases. It trains both in the practice of combat medicine and in the overall range of research, basic, laboratory and clinical. The Department of Medicine belongs to the School of Health Sciences of the University of Crete (PK) and was founded with Presidential Decree 653/76 initially as a Medical School, six years of study. After the Introduction of the Framework Law for Higher Education Institutions (Law 1268/82), the Medical School was renamed the Medical Department of the School of Health Sciences of the University of Crete. The Department of Medicine of PK was initially housed in prefabricated buildings of the University located 4 km south of Heraklion, near the archaeological site of Knossos. It started operating in the academic year 1984-85 with the admission of its first 91 students. During the first two years of the Department's operation, the teaching work was carried out by faculty members of other faculties of the University, such as the Faculty of Sciences or contractors. With the sub-no PD 96/2013 the Department of Medicine of the School of Health Sciences was renamed to a one-part School of Health Sciences, Department of Medicine and by decision of the Senate and the Council of the Foundation was renamed to Medical School.

Today, the Medical School has 127 faculty members. divided into 10 Sectors. Of these, 37 are Professors, 33 are Associate Professors, 49 are Assistant Professors and 4 are Lecturers.
